Weekend Fun – Mark Rosewater Has Apparently Gone Insane

Here’s the only GIF you ever need when talking about Magic. Just in time for the Mirrodin Besieged spoilers (as well as GDS2 fun as well)!

Save it, use it in forums, add it to your e-mails, or watch it anytime you need a pick me up. Quick access to the gif is right here: http://bit.ly/MaroInsane.

If you don’t know where this is from, enjoy!

Yes, the video is quite a bit cheesy, and they’re trying to bring back the puppet again. Oh, you don’t know the puppet WUBRG?

By no means are these spots that I’m saying everyone will laugh at; more groans then anything else and sometimes “I know people like that.” It’s an idea, and one that I hope continues to grow. They do show seeds of something’s there, but not there quite yet.

Yes, they’re meant to be educational about FNM’s and what they want to do with Mirrodin Besieged, but it doesn’t have the correct mixture of info and entertainment. The Puppet is not throwback/retro enough if he’s not being a typical MTG player (And that Puppet/Human relationship reference is just a little creepy).

Hopefully, I’ll get a little time and add in my 2 cents about a whole campaign about this in a future post.

In the mean time, enjoy the GIF. I’m sure Mr. Rosewater is going to hate me for this one for unleashing this animated goodness onto the internet (Good job on the acting, sir).

Design Class – You Win Some, You Infuse Some

Kinkiest Magic card art ever?

I feel bad for using a MaRo-type puny title; it must be all the designing I did this weekend.

Yes, with GDS2 now at a pause between rounds 3 and 4 where the final 101 will cut to the Top 8, we can go back and take a look at what we did and over-analyze and complain that we should’ve had more time. Let me make this clear: I doubt any one of us who entered is a professional card designer. Our entries were as polished as they were going to get with the time constraint and knowledge we all had.

I want to thank everyone for helping me out. Hopefully Team Color Pie will continue on and a Top 8 will be in sights and I’ll need even more of your help. But for now, let’s talk about design since I learned quite a bit this weekend. If you didn’t see any of the wiki or discussions, this will help you understand at least the process of the whole situation.

And no, this isn’t going to score me more points on the GDS2, this is just a cathartic release after a few intense days. I don’t know how MaRo can keep it bottled up for 18 months, but I’m willing to learn.

We Few, We Happy Few, We Band of Brothers

Editor’s Note: Behind the scenes inter-workings. This was going to be the title of the previous post, but it was combined with a previous draft and was less of an inspirational speech and more of a personal deceleration. Now, I’m really happy I can use this title.

And Crispin Crispian shall ne’er go by,
From this day to the ending of the world,
But we in it shall be remembered-
We few, we happy few, we band of brothers;
For he to-day that sheds his blood with me
Shall be my brother; be he ne’er so vile,
This day shall gentle his condition;

Henry V, Shakespeare

First, I want to thank you all for yesterday. I’m glad that I it was accepted with such gusto by the MTG community. That was, by far, the most visited and voted on non-Lotus Cobra is Evil post in a while here on MTGCP. If I inspired you to do the same thing, good, we need more people like you.

Now that The Great Designer Search 2 has begun, it’s time to get cracking.

If you haven’t read it yet, I would suggest clicking that link and taking a look at it. Besides the really long text, there is a hugely changed difference from last year.

Fan participation.

Even if you’ve been knocked out or don’t live in the US or even if you’re underage, you can still participate.

And I need your help.

After PAX – The After Party to the After Party

Volkan Bega, doing art for every powerful artifact now.

So PAX has come and gone and new spoilers for Scars of Mirrodin have been, um spoiled (I was notified that WotC doesn’t call them spoilers, but previews). But besides the awesome party and the new cards, I was fortunate enough to talk to several WotC employees. If you had been following my Twitter feed like I suggested (@mtgcolorpie), you would’ve read what some of the higher ups thought about the new set.

Luckily, for those of you who don’t follow me on Twitter will see a majority of those quotes here as well. This is not going to be a review of PAX nor the party (both really good times), but what I thought about certain things and who I talked to and what they said.

Please note: I am not a journalist. I’m not like Bill Stark and my life isn’t based reporting news so I don’t want to get quotes wrong. While I don’t want to misquote people, so I’m going to do it form the twitter quotes earlier. The short interviews I conducted throughout the day and the night will be told in brief here. If any of the parties feels I misunderstood or twisted their words please feel free to contact me and I’ll correct it.

I also want to thank my many readers and followers on twitter, without them, I don’t think that I would’ve been able to get some of the responses out of these great people. I want to thank them too for being so nice to allow me to talk to them. Of course, every time I’ve interacted with them they’ve been nothing but nice and helpful, and not just me but to everyone they’ve talked to when I watch. It may be just me, but I seriously doubt it’s an act.

To the recap!

Cool Stuff Inc Presents: Odds and Ends

TGotD2 Winner: @Twinblaze2

I’ve got some things that I’m bunching together, hence the second part of the title of Odds and Ends.

All of today’s words are sponsored by the website: Cool Stuff Inc.

Alright, not all of the words, but a good portion of them.

It’s like people only do these things because they can get paid. And that’s just really sad.

In the brilliant comedic movie Wayne’s World, there’s a scene where Wayne and Garth talk about having to do plugs for products, which they plug products ironically. Doing what they loved and now getting paid for it means they have to plug certain things and compromising their ideals to make sure it was profitable and didn’t offend anyone.

While I may not be Wayne nor Garth, I’ve pointed out before that I have no advertisers on this blog; it’s a personal choice that I do this (and 99EDH.com) for the love of the game. It was after I said that that I was approached by several websites who sell Magic product (and I think a dating one) to advertise on this site. I turned them down (and still do) because I want to write what I want on here without sponsors going “Really?” From fake conversations with Mark Rosewater to having Aaron Forsythe channel his inner Alec Baldwin, to just meeting and playing against really nice people, I want to control what content gets written on my blog.
